Formula 1 racing games have been around for decades, and even in the early 2000s it was possible for multiple developers to get a licence to make a game, rather than the exclusive deals we have become familiar more recently. More competition among F1 games could be a good and a bad thing though, as Nathan Quinn explores with a trip back to visit the best and worst F1 games that have ever been produced.

21.02.2023I have to ask, what was so bad about F1 2011? It's my first ever F1 game (apart from the unofficial "Speed" which sucks) so I have a soft spot for it, but I thought it was fine, albeit quite barebones compared to 2012

21.02.20231988 Grand Prix Circuit for MS-Dos, made by Accolade… that was a epic game. Featuring all the tracks, and for that time amazing levels of 3D effects.. a grandfather of all coming F1 computer games
Edit*- was missing the company making the game.
Bonus info, they also made the very first hot pursuit game

21.02.2023F1 97 made my childhood, epic game! F1 99 made me hate my ps1!

21.02.2023Great list. In my opinion F1 world Grand Prix (season 1997) for n64 was really really good, with also the possibility to play with real facts of 97 season

21.02.2023F1 2015 has no Career Mode thoβ¦
Expedito Paz
21.02.2023Considering F1 2020 is better than 2021, this list is still very accurate now, on April 2022

20.02.2023No Grand Prix Legends? :O
jtd2001
20.02.2023one thing f1 2014 does better than f1 2015 is having an actual career mode π

20.02.2023I had luck to have Formula one 97 as first game !

20.02.2023Oi, I loved Official Formula 1 Racing – it's a darn good arcade style game. What you showed was NOT what the game was like. I assume the game is buggy because you're trying to run it on modern hardware. It also looks like the speed is not correct.
EDIT: I checked footage taken by those playing on actual hardware of the time and it looks & plays a great deal better than what you show. Please don't pan a game because you never played the original but tried to frankenstein it on modern hardware.

20.02.2023Are there any decent F1 games for the Switch?

20.02.2023For me the best is F1 2006 for PS2 Even to this day the graphics are amazing and carreer mode is very fun.

20.02.2023Nice list but where is f1 2012 ???! Such a great game !

19.02.2023There was a little known N64 game which I think was called simply "F1 Racing Championship" back in 1999.
Unlike it's prequel "Monaco somethingorother" it was fully licensed, and the handling model was similar to PS1's F1 '97, meaning you could bin it at any moment if you lost concentration.
The World Grand Prix series was much more fondly remembered by N64 players (I loved those too!) but this game was far more realistic, and for a console playing kid in the 90s it felt like almost a sim of sorts! I still boot it up every now and then for a few laps! Anyone else remember that?

19.02.2023Formula 97 on the Nintendo 64 was better for me than the Playstation Version.

19.02.2023I really like the video, but how come we get "wiv" followed by "this"? If "th" is a "v" sound, be consistent.

19.02.2023I tried many and I still have Championship Edition for PS3, I think it's still the greatest F1 game ever made to date ππ€π»
I think F1 2003 for PS2 is VERY underrated too
Faka
19.02.2023F1 2015 was the worst just by not having a career mode, that is terrible for a previous gen game
Pyro Renegade
19.02.2023F1 2012 was lit too
Arthur Herman
19.02.202313:53 Nothing? How about Career mode? 2015 had nothing

19.02.2023I hope the 2003 game is high up in the best games

19.02.2023Formula 1 2001 (not the EA one) was my personal fave. Admittedly it was bundled with my ps2 so I am totally biased but I really enjoyed it. Came with a really cool dvd too

16.02.2023F1 2006/ Championship edition is my most favorite F1 game
BaggyMonkey
16.02.2023I'd include F1 2018 (XBOX ONE) in the list of best games! Purely on the racing, when u increase the difficulty it gets noticeably harder and whilst not entirely realistic the driving sim is the most fluent and flowing of all the F1 games I've played. Also the level of work with the team and R&D included is just right! The only major black mark for me is the a.i. drivers aren't programmed to make driver errors or cause pile ups at the start!

16.02.2023The best F1 game for me is F1 97 by PS1.

16.02.2023Is f1 championship edition Available in Asia or only Europe?? And is formula 99-02 in PC
Adam Smith
16.02.2023Grand Prix Challenge was pretty good. I wouldn't put it on this list either but I certainly racked a lot of Milage on that game

16.02.2023I think 2015 was the worst modern F1 game – although the first PS4 game in the series it was terrible
mr_s.crow
16.02.2023You forgot grand prix legend wich was one of the best F1 game. F1 97 was great but F1 World grand prix on N64 was better.
aaa sss
16.02.2023F1 2014 is the worst. Period.
NG_17
16.02.2023best: 1. F1 1995 2. F1 97 3. F1 Championship Edition 4. F1 2022 5. GP4 Worst: 1. F1 2009 2. F1 2014 3. F1 98 4. F1 2002 5. F1 race stars.
Edit: Forgot about F1 Grand Prix for the PSP

16.02.2023The best F1 game is always F1 Championship Special Edition
No doubt!!!

15.02.2023This reminded me just how much I de-freaking-spised pop-in.
Thank the gaming gods we don't have to deal with that crap anymore !

15.02.2023Anyone else here ancient enough to remember the arcade game Pole Position?
I don't remember a ton about it (it's 40 years old, after all), but I do recall that one left turn where 99% of players just spun the steering wheel as hard as they could, letting it spin the entire time through the corner and grabbing it at the exit.
First racing game I can ever remember playing is the handheld 'Digital Derby' from 1978.
lol @ "digital."
It was about as analog as a game can get. Still fun af at the time, though. I wanted one, but never got it.
Codi 95
15.02.2023I want to say that F1 2012 and f1 2013 should have been mention being incredibly good and having more cool things than f1 2014 and f1 2015 and both of them are better than f1 2017 and 2018 when you talk about handling,AI and cars were coller.
I think 2013 was the best f1 game until f1 2019 come
Painterguy Lincs
15.02.2023Best F1 sim: Crammond GP4
Worst F1 sim: Everything else.
The level of fine tuning in every aspect of the car setup, plus the data logs, made GP4 not just a game but a real simulation.
Master Sifu
15.02.2023Grand prix 4 its the pinnacle for me from formula 1 game, F1 championship edition was also something special for a F1 racing game. Too bad that now with all the technology and graphics they cant come up with a proper F1 racing game.there is always something missing. If somebody does a remake of Grand Prix 4 now ill buy it instantly.
Blackout
15.02.2023I've seen many Videos about F1 games, reviews or rankings or whatever and tbh they only make sense when they're from Nathan.
TEXACO83ITA
15.02.2023i hated f1 98, had no reason to exist, the worst f1 of the series
Tim Peachey
15.02.2023You dont sound old enough to review F1 games before about 2005.

15.02.2023What is the point is comparing games on the ps1 and ps2 with modern games. You cant just compared graphical limitations, you also need to compare the hardware. You just seem to think if its old its sh1t.

15.02.2023Couldn't agree more on F1 97 and the OG F1 1996 (with season 1995). Even today those games are so much fun! Bizzare creations did an amazing job in those games.
